Abstract

The cultivation of critical thinking, academic competence, and positive values has become increasingly important in contemporary elementary education as schools seek to prepare learners for complex academic, social, and ethical challenges. Holistic teaching practices offer opportunities to address learners’ cognitive, affective, social, and moral development simultaneously. This study explored the holistic teaching practices employed by Grade 4 teachers in fostering critical thinking, academic competence, and positive values among learners in Kayan East Elementary School, Philippines. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and reflective conversations involving ten Grade 4 teachers. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework guided the analysis of qualitative data. Findings revealed that teachers foster holistic learner development through inquiry-based learning, collaborative classroom engagement, contextualized instruction, values integration across subject areas, reflective learning practices, and supportive teacher-learner relationships. These practices enabled learners to develop analytical thinking, academic proficiency, self-confidence, responsibility, respect, and social awareness. The findings underscore the significance of learner-centered and value-oriented pedagogies in promoting balanced learner development. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on holistic education and provides implications for curriculum implementation, teacher professional development, and educational leadership in elementary schools.
